The Whistler Nordic Centre project includes the construction of access road upgrades and parking areas, and three permanent stadium areas for Cross Country, Biathlon, and Ski Jumping, each with a spectator capacity of 12,000 (achieved through the provision of temporary seats and standing areas) In addition, 50 km to 100 km of new trails, 90 M and 120 M ski jumps and a Biathlon facility will be built. Various temporary and permanent facilities including a Nordic day lodge, sport operation buildings, and maintenance facility will also be constructed.

Construction of the Nordic Centre is should be completed by June, 2007 and will cost over $100 million.

The eventual goal of the Whistler Nordic Centre plan for the Callaghan Valley is to create an accessible, world-class destination for all of the Nordic sports, and to maximize year-round use of compatible outdoor recreational and sporting activities, such as mountain biking and walking trails during the summer? .. After winning the Olympics and realising that Whistler, B.C. may have one of the nicest mountains with some of the best skiing, snow boarding, snow shoeing conditions in all of Canada. Now Im talking low end here folks we all know that you can get all the luxuries of home I suppose in the hotel/motel experience as long as you have the coin to back it up.

Bed and Breakfasts - Now here is a truly comfortable way to travel in fact it is one of my favourite accommodation methods, you wake up to warm feeling and your breakfast is made for you before you step the last step in the kitchen, the conversation is friendly talking to the family that may be hosting or to some other travellers that happen to be passing through. Like I said my absolute favourite way to travel with the feeling of comfort and a feeling of home.

Cabin/Condo Rentals - This is a great way to travel is you are travelling with a group of 5 or more people, I love the feeling of the great outdoors just outside my bedroom and the feeling of camaraderie when you are travelling with a few of your closest friends, and it gives you the feeling that you are camping. Now if you are not feeling much like your an outdoorsy person and require the same luxury of home and with a reasonable budget you can always rent a condo and live like you never left home.

The choice is really up to you, whether you enjoy hotel living or you want to feel the comforts of living like you never left home in your own condo rental. One thing is for sure, Whistler has got their groove back and if you want to catch the best deals the time to book is now! Whistler is on the verge of their best season and if you wait too long you may miss the boat!

The best season for visiting Whistler

Whistler is internationally renowned as a year-round resort, with recreational activities for all the family available at any time of year. So if you are planning to come to
Whistler, what is the best time of year?

Let’s take this question step by step. If you are coming for the skiing on Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, you can really only choose sometime between November and April. Although skiing is available up until July, it is not for the serious skier, due to the combination of marginal snow cover and limited terrain availability. Within this time, don’t bother with November, when the risk of little or no snow will be considerable. So your choice is effectively between the months from December to April. What are the main pros and cons of each month?

December is a curate’s egg. The early part will find empty slopes, great deals on lodging and in the restaurants, but a bit of a gamble with respect to the snow. If the snow gods are smiling on you, this will be an excellent time to visit. If not, bring your oldest skis and set aside some time for treatments in some of Whistler’s legendary spas. Later in the month, and especially over Christmas and New Year, you will pay the highest prices of the season, have to fight for a table in any of the most sought-after restaurants and stand in some very long queues on the Harmony Chair. However you will experience the adrenalin which goes with the height of the season in Whistler: the buzzing atmosphere, the parades, the firework displays etc. If you can afford it, this is a wonderful time to come.

January frequently offers the heaviest snowfalls of the year (in 2006 January was the snowiest month since record-keeping began). It also offers great prices on accommodation (you can safely wait to the last minute to look for deals), and no lift lines, except perhaps on weekend powder days, when the cognoscenti will queue up early to leave their mark on the mountain. On the other hand it can occasionally be extremely chilly, and it tends to get dark very early. If you are a true enthusiast, January may be the month for you.

February and March see bigger crowds, but are more laid back. You might want to avoid both Presidents Week in February and Spring Break in March; if your family schedule will allow this you could have the best of all worlds: lots of snow on the ground, a good chance of sunshine and easier access to the best restaurants in town.

April appeals primarily to the British and Mexican markets, who come over for their Easter vacations. However, take care on your accommodation choice if you come in
April: there may be lots of snow at the top but a shortage at the bottom of the hill, so don’t bother to pay the premium for ski-in, ski-out accommodation.

Whistler Back In The Saddle

After winning the Olympics and realising that Whistler, B.C. may have one of the nicest mountains with some of the best skiing, snow boarding, snow shoeing conditions in all of Canada. Whistler has always been a great escape from the everyday whether you are local or you travel great lengths to get here. It has been consistent and always a rush to go up for a great ski getaway. The last two seasons we have seen a dramatic difference in the conditions, where did all the snow go? Now all points seem to pull toward the massive warming of the earth due to green air gas emissions and global warming.

I believe the tides are finally changing for our little whistler village, with our slopes opening up early and the snow has just kept on going. With the snow going like crazy so early in the season I can imagine that this is going to be one of whistlers best seasons in quite some time. So what next? I guess the influx of snow and the great conditions are going to bring their fair share of tourists, skiers, snow boarders etc. This means that if you are looking for a place to stay when you head in to Whistler Village the time to book is now.

Your next question may be: Well what would be the best bang for my buck. There are a variety of options when you are looking for accommodations in the busiest spot of the season. When you are looking for accommodations depending on the length of stay you want to be more than anything comfortable and lets not kid ourselves you want it to be affordable. So lets go over the possibilities of what kind of accommodations there are available in Whistler.

Hotels/Motels - Well if you are going to in up one day and out the next this could be cost effective. The wonderful thing about hotels is they have a bed, and a bathroom and if your lucky you could get there dried up continental breakfast, or you could spend some extra cash and go off to the next greasy spoon and eat your self into a heart attack. Now Im talking low end here folks we all know that you can get all the luxuries of home I suppose in the hotel/motel experience as long as you have the coin to back it up.

Bed and Breakfasts - Now here is a truly comfortable way to travel in fact it is one of my favourite accommodation methods, you wake up to warm feeling and your breakfast is made for you before you step the last step in the kitchen, the conversation is friendly talking to the family that may be hosting or to some other travellers that happen to be passing through. Like I said my absolute favourite way to travel with the feeling of comfort and a feeling of home.

Cabin/Condo Rentals - This is a great way to travel is you are travelling with a group of 5 or more people, I love the feeling of the great outdoors just outside my bedroom and the feeling of camaraderie when you are travelling with a few of your closest friends, and it gives you the feeling that you are camping. Now if you are not feeling much like your an outdoorsy person and require the same luxury of home and with a reasonable budget you can always rent a condo and live like you never left home.

The choice is really up to you, whether you enjoy hotel living or you want to feel the comforts of living like you never left home in your own condo rental. One thing is for sure, Whistler has got their groove back and if you want to catch the best deals the time to book is now! Whistler is on the verge of their best season and if you wait too long you may miss the boat!

Squamish, Whistler Real Estate Markets Gear Up For 2010 Olympics

There is nothing like worldwide attention to drive interest in a region?s real estate market, and nothing drives World-wide attention like the Olympic Games. Since the announcement that Vancouver and Whistler would co-host the 2010 Olympics, The real estate market in the area between Vancouver and Whistler has been exciting to say the least.

While the Whistler Real Estate Market is historically famous for its high priced homes and chronic staff housing shortages, much of that has dissipated over the last few years. Whistler Real Estate sales remain steady as its profile is further increased, and since, compared to options like Vail or Aspen, Whistler offers a competitive option in securing ski resort real estate.

Further to the South, things are even more interesting. For decades, Squamish BC, a quiet industrial town at the end of the spectacular inlet of Howe Sound, lived in relative obscurity between it?s much more famous neighbours of Vancouver and Whistler. This quiet town of 15,000 was home to those who were tolerant of the commute to Whistler or Vancouver, forestry industry workers, and a few passionate outdoor recreationists.

However, the fact that the next Winter Olympics will take place in venues both north and south of Squamish and a concurrent booming British Columbia economy, combined with a hot Vancouver housing market have boosted awareness of the Squamish Real Estate Market. Squamish is now attracting a great deal of interest as a place to live and invest in real estate. Housing developments are springing up or being planned all over this town, which has recently branded itself ?The Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada?.

For decades, the spectacular Squamish waterfront has been dominated by industry, most notably a saw mill, a deep sea port, and a chemical plant. But the Sawmill is gone, and 1300 housing units are planned as part of ?Waterfront Landing?, a development by Pridham that will see townhouses, apartment towers, and an impressive a waterfront walkway talk the place of a former sawmill.

For many, Squamish?s key attraction, the one thing that by far sets it apart from just about any place on earth, is the incredible variety of outdoor recreation opportunities available in this town. Just the sheer number of outdoor recreation activities available is hard to comprehend and it is a challenge to even attempt to catalogue them all. The rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, white water kayaking, ocean kayaking, kite surfing, wind surfing, and river rafting are all frequently described as ?world class? in Squamish. Add to that three great golf courses, horseback riding, scuba diving, fishing, some road cycling and options for boat tours or air tours, and it is clear that many days of adventure can be fulfilled in Squamish, whether by resident or tourist. And of course, for those living in Squamish, a considerable bonus is the proximity to Whistler, putting world class downhill skiing a short drive away.

Moving towards taking advantage of the growing tourism opportunities, The District of Squamish has just completed a Tourism Information Centre on the well-traveled Highway 99. The $6 million structure is known as the ?The Adventure Centre?. The impressive, ?saddle shaped? building contains a coffee shop and district offices as well as standard Tourist Information Offices.

Real Estate in Squamish draws a great deal of interest from North Vancouver and with the commute from Squamish to Vancouver now shorter than from the Fraser Valley, there is a lot of interest from residents who are not sure they want to endure the daily slow drive from the Fraser Valley, the area to the east of Vancouver that has seen the greatest interest from the Vancouver based worker. And with its isolation, Squamish offers an escape from urban sprawl and an authentic small town feel.

Squamish has seen a huge increase in prices, with eight $1,000,000 plus homes for sale at the current time, and it is predicted that in a couple years time, it will be quite common to see $1,000,000 homes. At the other end of the real estate market, Squamish remains the most affordable community between Maple Ridge and Whistler.

Squamish market is also attracting young urban dwellers hoping to purchase reasonably priced homes in a favorite destination for recreation. Squamish is confident that it can sustain this growth and that it has every opportunity to become the service centre for places like Whistler and Pemberton, the other main towns in the Sea to Sky corridor. The addition of stores like Wal-Mart and Home Depot will inevitably make Squamish the place where people from Pemberton and Whistler go to shop, rather than having to drive the extra miles to North Vancouver.

As mentioned in the beginning of this article, Whistler ski resort is a family oriented vacation resort. There are very well organized programs for the children. Whistler Kids is one of the largest children skiing and snow boarding programs you can find in any ski resorts.

The Magic Carpets kids program make learning skiing easy for the young beginners. At the Adventure Camps, your kids get to stay with the same group of children learner and instructor all week long. The Whistler ski resorts even have a licensed childcare service. As for your teenagers, they can join a week-long “Ride Tribe”.

The Big Easy Terrain Garden in the resort is a gentler terrain park meant for kids skiing or snowboarding. Then there are Adventure and Play Zones too. Blackcomb Mountain has a Children’s Adventure Park, with runs through the forest and there is even a ski-through castle. For night skiing, families can ride the Magic Chair ski lift use the beginners’ slope or have fun on a number of added features such as rails and boxes.
